Balfour Beatty MECD building
Balfour Beatty Construction were contracted to construct the new MECD buildings for Manchester University. To facilitate this significant construction scheme Balfour wanted to provide the workforce with the highest quality office and welfare facilities. The rationale for this was to ensure HSE standards were set at the highest levels and to create optimum working efficiency in the office environment. Premier Modular was selected as the supply chain partner to design and manufacture the scheme due to the flexibility of their Transline Plus product and the rapid delivery options available. Premier Modular’s Transline Plus product offers full flexibility to deliver open plan accommodation with higher than average ceiling heights and the option to reconfigure as required.
The Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) is one of the largest, single construction projects ever undertaken by a higher education institution in the United Kingdom and will transform the way in which the University educates future engineers in response to the needs of the fast-changing global economy.
The build, due to open in 2020, is part of the University’s campus master plan to create a world-leading teaching, learning and research campus to develop the engineers and innovators of tomorrow.
Premier Modular used their new Transline Plus product for the accommodation which consisted of four storeys totalling 1,894m2 of office and welfare space, with a roof viewing deck giving visibility over the whole site area.
The building also included 2no external staircases, an internal staircase and a platform lift. The completed facility provided changing rooms, drying rooms, first aid facilities, an induction room, office space and canteen area complete with commercial kitchen space. There are meeting rooms and conference facilities featuring double glazed windows throughout. Dehumidification to the drying room areas, fully air conditioned offices, LED lighting, emergency lighting and a power grid plus data installation capability.
Premier’s highly experienced project management teams demonstrated their expertise installing the building in under 6 days, achieved by working night shifts so not to disturb the live construction project, which only required a further 6 weeks to finalise and commission the building fit-out.
