Preparing schools for September 2026 and beyond

05/05/26 Modular Classrooms

Every spring, National Offer Day take centre stage in the minds of children, parents and teachers alike, as pupils across the country find out which secondary school has offered them a place.

Secondary school offer day took place in March, ready for September 2026. For teachers, school leadership teams and estates managers receiving information about the next years student intake, it’s likely that considerations quickly turn to existing infrastructure, and potential changes required to meet the needs of the next generation of pupils.

So, what strategies can estates managers take to ensure that the current and future needs of pupils are met effectively?

Meeting the needs of future students

Schools that require new buildings, or upgrades to existing facilities, are likely to be exploring potential construction across the summer holidays to limit student disruption and in anticipation of the new cohort. A maximum of six weeks for a construction projects completion would appear to be a challenge. However, unlike traditional bricks and mortar buildings, modules can be on site and operational in a matter of weeks if necessary.

For many schools, the need to expand or enhance estates has come at a time when resources and funding are already strained, and finding solutions that are cost effective, without compromising on quality is a critical priority. Traditional construction can all too often be time-consuming and costly for schools. Beyond the finances, the physical process also causes a lot of disruption, including noise, dust, and safety hazards on site.

In contrast, modular classrooms provide a fast and effective solution. Constructed off site and then transported and installed, the whole process is quick and seamless, with minimal disruption. Modular construction benefits from simultaneous site preparation and module construction, and factory-controlled environments eliminate many variables that cause cost overruns, allowing for more accurate budgeting and financial planning, right from the start.

Flexible spaces for changing student populations

Schools only have a matter of months between National Offer Day and welcoming a new cohort, meaning estates need to be flexible and accommodate a changing pupil population.

Modular buildings have the option of being temporary or rental, giving schools more flexibility. They are also easy to scale so educational institutes can accommodate a fluctuating number of students.  Modular spaces can be customised to swiftly adapt to everchanging needs. For example, buildings can be used during a spike in student numbers, or to keep lessons running smoothly while a major renovation project is underway. In these circumstances, modular units can be customised and used as science labs, music rooms, or other specialised spaces. They can even be relocated and reassembled if needed so schools can efficiently respond to changing pupil numbers and curriculum demands without the complications of traditional construction.

Just over 1.7 million pupils in England’s schools receive support for special educational needs (SEND), or about one in five pupils. Modular solutions have been particularly useful for schools looking to deploy specialist SEND spaces to help students. Through modular, buildings can be delivered faster, with up to 50% less time on site. Premier Modular’s facilities are all purpose-built environments, and helpful feature can be designed and incorporated, such as sensory rooms, therapy spaces, calm breakout areas, from day one.

Sustainable, circular buildings for modern school estates

Avital consideration for any school undergoing construction or deploying new facilities is sustainability, as the UK government aims for all schools to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Modular facilities can be built using sustainable methods and materials, helping to reduce carbon footprint.

Modular construction is inherently more sustainable than traditional building methods. By manufacturing all lightweight building components in a single location and then transporting these to site, far fewer vehicle movements are required.

Offsite techniques also limit unnecessary waste by using precision manufacturing to make all components to exact specifications. Waste is also significantly reduced by the circularity of rental modular solutions, as these units can be installed, used, disassembled and redeployed or repurposed many times over.

Finally, modular solutions lower operational emissions. At Premier Modular, our precision manufacturing techniques create airtight environments that increase thermal efficiency, which means lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions. Also, modular solutions are easily fitted or designed with green technologies, ranging from solar PV panels to ground source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting systems.

Educational institutions face growing pressure to adapt quickly to changing student numbers and sustainability targets. Modular buildings offer a practical, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible solution, and modular construction enables schools to respond swiftly to current needs while future-proofing estates for generations to come.
