Delivering a temporary ‘learning village’ when it was needed most.
After discovering structural integrity concerns that couldn’t be repaired, St Peter’s C of E Junior School, in Ruddington, was forced to close. Although the local authority were able to secure the 350 pupils temporary places in neighbouring schools for a term, St Peter’s required an alternative solution which would enable pupils to return to their school surroundings as soon as possible.
Speed was of the essence to get a suitable teaching facility ready. Arc Partnership, a joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and SCAPE, was responsible for finding a solution that could be delivered and installed quickly, whilst also providing a safe and welcoming environment for students and teachers.
We were appointed by Arc Partnership to deliver a full turnkey package, including design, construction, delivery and installation of a modular learning village to provide teaching space for the pupils enrolled at the school.
Building on challenging ground conditions
The site for St Peter’s new modular school buildings was in close proximity to a flood plain, making groundworks particularly challenging for our team. The project started in the winter, and the project team faced record rainfall events which only added to the volume of water on site. The school’s football field, for example, was under water during the project, and as we excavated the foundations they would refill with water.
To overcome the foundation flooding, we implemented carefully sequenced groundworks along with adequate drainage to manage water ingress. This considered approach meant that we could successfully maintain progress on site without disruption from any potential flooding. Close coordination between ourselves and Arc Partnership allowed us to safely deliver the groundworks and infrastructure despite the adverse weather conditions.
Following the sudden closure of the existing school due to structural issues, St Peter’s was under extreme pressure to find a quick-turnaround solution to get the 350 pupils back on site and continue their lessons in a familiar setting.
To turnaround the project in record time, we accelerated delivery by running design, manufacturing, and groundworks in parallel. We were able to take advantage of our existing stock, repurposing and reconfiguring modules to construct a bespoke setup for the school. Due to our speed of delivery and manufacture, we delivered the full learning village in approximately half the standard programme timeframe.
