Modular is driving greener construction and more efficient built environments

18/02/26

The UK is pushing towards more sustainable construction and efficient built environments, driven by government initiatives like the Circular Economy Taskforce and investor focus on ESG, and at Premier Modular we are paving the way with our industry leading modular solutions.

Modular buildings offer both sustainability and circularity, driven by innovative design, low-carbon construction methods, optimised modular transport and onsite processes, and energy-efficient, recyclable materials.

Through offsite manufacturing, we provide ample sustainability benefits for our customers and can safely say that we are committed to making construction greener and leading the way for a circular built environment.

Here is how we are leading the way in sustainable construction:

Modular is sustainable by design

Premier Modular’s long-term vision is to deliver a better tomorrow for society and the environment through premium, long lasting, modular buildings that are sustainable by design.

We have an award-winning track record of working with clients to achieve BREEAM Excellent ratings. To enhance operational performance, we integrate renewable and energy-efficient technologies, including solar panels, green roofs to support plant life on top of buildings, rainwater harvesting and ground source heat pumps, directly into the design phase.

Modular utilises efficient and low carbon materials

Our modules are resource efficient and built with longevity in mind. Material selection is central to the success of circular construction, and we prioritise using materials that are 100% recyclable or reusable.

Our team utilises recycled steel, which retains full structural strength through repeated reuse and can be recycled indefinitely without quality loss, preserving embodied energy, and further reducing the carbon footprint. We also use timber procured from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-registered companies, a renewable alternative to high-embodied-energy materials traditionally used in construction, like concrete and aluminium. By using lighter-weight products more frequently, modular construction also helps cut down transport emissions.

Precision engineering in modular construction for quality, efficiency and waste reduction

Our offsite construction provides enhanced precision and quality control. Each module is built in a factory environment to precise manufacturing standards, meaning our solutions meet industry compliance requirements and regulations, every time.

Our focus on precision engineering helps reduce offcuts, limiting the energy required to cut materials into the correct shape or size, and the amount of waste generated. Since 2024, our factories have sent zero waste-to-landfill – 66% is recycled and 34% is converted to energy.

Driving circularity through reusable modular buildings

One of the most effective pathways to sustainable construction is circular design, where materials and structures are repurposed or reused. Our modular solutions achieve this through the unique, adaptable nature of the units, which, whether they are short or long-term rental or permanent solutions, can be repurposed or recycled at end-of-life. This means that the embodied carbon within modular buildings never gets released, leading to lowered emissions.

Minimising waste and reducing energy usage is in our DNA, and we have differentiated ourselves by offering and investing in a uniquely circular proposition. Our rental products are high-quality and built to last. They are repurposed on average 12 times over the course of their ~40-year lifespan, significantly minimising waste.

Premier Modular’s ESG vision & strategy for 2026 and beyond

At Premier Modular, we are committed to leading the way to a circular built environment. Circular design isn’t a future ambition for our team, it’s how we operate today.

In 2026, we will continue our focus on the circular economy. We are investing in further data-driven emissions reduction initiatives and promoting the benefits of circularity to the construction industry. In 2026, we will:

  • Drive circularity – our team aims to significantly grow our semi permanent and rental solutions, using reusable modular buildings to strengthen circularity and deliver more sustainable outcomes.
  • Raise awareness of the benefits of circularity – we plan to do even more to encourage contractors and end users to opt in to circularity by choosing maximum future flexibility using our rental solutions instead of more traditional models. We have developed a new Carbon Calculator to aid customers in their understanding of the relative carbon impact of each solution, depending on the features included.
  • Enhance data transparency – we are strengthening our data transparency by embedding data-driven monitoring across operations, enabling continuous improvement and providing clients with the insights they need to reduce energy use and emissions.
