Phil Davies, Director of Procurement at NHS Shared Business Services (SBS) explains why modular building must be part of the solution in the July/August 2018 edition of the National Health Executive Magazine.

As the NHS looks into how it can manage its rapidly deteriorating estate Phil Davies explores how the NHS SBS has developed a framework specifically for the use of modular buildings.  The framework provides a fully OJEU-compliant route to market for any NHS or public sector organisation and Premier Modular is proud to be part of that framework.

Offsite construction delivers a range of benefits over the use of traditional build methods:

  • Faster return on investment due to reduced programmes. As the modules are manufactured on a flow line there is no risk of late delivery due to inclement weather or site restrictions. At Premier’s East Yorkshire manufacturing hub, they can produce 20 modules a day, approximately 2500m2 per week.
  • As much as 75% of a building is manufactured offsite, this reduces construction traffic and noise in the sensitive health environment, meaning the hospital can maintain its high quality day to day care standards whilst expanding its service offering
  • Off-site construction also significantly reduces the risk of accidents on site and modules are manufactured to exacting quality levels in controlled factories.

In a market where shortages exist, building standards for comfort and infection control are extremely high, sustainability is of growing importance and budgets are tight - offsite construction has to be a big part of the solution.
